Body Mass Index or "BMI" is a measure defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as "a number calculated from a person's weight and height. BMI is a fairly reliable indicator of body fatness for most people."
Use the BMI calculator tool above to see your BMI, keeping in mind that this is a general reference tool that does not measure body fat directly. For a more accurate analysis a fat caliper test can be done to calculate body fat vs. lean muscle by taking skinfold thickness measurements.
| BMI | Weight Status |
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 - 24.9 | Normal |
| 25.0 - 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and Above | Obese |
The CDC also notes that "the BMI ranges are based on a relationship between body weight and disease and death (cited from the World Health Organization 1995 study). Over weight and obese individuals are at an increased risk for many diseases and health conditions including:"
- Hypertension
- Dyslipidemia (eg. high LDL cholesterol, low HDL, or high Triglycerides)
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Coronary Heart Disease
- Stroke
- Gallbladder Disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Sleep Apnea and Respiratory Conditions
- Some Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
