First Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive '08:
Back to Basics has been operating in Newport Beach for the past 27 years to help improve and promote the health and well being of the residents of our community. At Thanksgiving in 2008, we decided to partner with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County and Trader Joes to co-sponsor a food drive. In light of the devastating fires in Fall 2008 throughout Orange County, and other economic pressure across our nation, the Doctors at Back to Basics saw an immediate need to reach out to our local community to coordinate this charity event. Joining hands with Trader Joes on 19th Street in Costa Mesa, patients and other philanthropic members of the Newport Beach community combined their efforts and managed to raise 1591 pounds of food and over $240 in cash donations (worth over $2880 in food value to Second Harvest) to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
The donated non-perishable food and personal care items HELP FEED 220,000 people in Orange County and every $1 donated provides $12 worth of food. As reported by Second Harvest: "In Orange County, the 36th most affluent county in the nation, there are more than 400,000 people at risk of going to bed hungry sometime each month. The majority of people at risk of going hungry each month are children and single parents, seniors on fixed incomes, the working poor, and other men and women confronted by financial difficulty or who are physically unable to earn a living."
As health and wellness providers, Back to Basics' Doctors believe it is our duty to reach out to our local community and help in as many ways as we can. We would personally like to thank each and every person that made this charity event a huge success, including the staff and management from Trader Joes, the Second Harvest Food Bank, and all of our patients and other conscientious members of the Newport Beach community.
Back to Basics plans to make the Thanksgiving Food Drive an Annual Event in Newport Beach.
Thank You Everyone!
Dr. Tom Hewitt, Dr. Ryan Samuelian and the Back to Basics Staff.
