Running is a popular sport. You need nothing more than an open space and your feet! Some people would even debate whether you even need a pair of running shoes! Many people are getting involved in half and full marathons, "Mud Runs" and "Color Runs" and there is also a shift towards runners trying a "new" (correction "old") barefoot style of running, or using minimalist styles of shoes. The human body is designed to do some amazing things, this short video above debates concepts in the popular National Bestseller book "Born to Run" by author Christopher McDougall. Mr. McDougall can also be seen talking about the human ability to run in this recent TEDTALK. Our body may also benefit from running on natural surfaces such as grass, dirt or sand instead of roads/concrete/asphalt which increases the impact and shock to our spine and joints. If you or someone you know is a Runner, has recently taken up running or is considering changing their running style to a barefoot or minimalist style, be sure that all necessary precautions are being taken to allow your body to adapt. It is also highly recommended to provide adequate recovery and restoration by getting regular chiropractic care and massage therapy, and using tools like a Foam Roller or RockTape on a consistent basis to avoid injury. There are even home exercises you can do to help strengthen the foot for barefoot running. If you have a running injury, the Class IV K-Laser available at Back to Basics is a very effective way to reduce inflammation, speed healing and get you back on the trail! Additionally there are many nutritional supplements you may consider to help prevent joint degeneration, speed healing, reduce cramping or tension and aid muscle recovery.
